How To Use This Resource
Select one question to be asked at the beginning of each board meeting. Choose a question related to a recent situation the board has faced, as a way to reinforce appropriate governance roles and responsibilities. Select a question connected to an upcoming agenda item to help frame the board’s discussion at the governance level. Rotate through categories over time to ensure balanced development across key areas of board responsibility. Once the Check-in question has been asked, use the Answer and Explanation to clarify why the response reflects good governance practice. You may also wish to lead a brief discussion using the accompanying Discussion and Facilitator Notes. Keep the conversation focused and time-bound (ideally no more than 4–5 minutes) so the board can transition effectively into their formal agenda.
